Standard Door Sizes Explained

What is the UK’s standard external front door size?

It may come as a surprise to learn that there isn’t a single standard door size in the UK, with homeowners and door companies working to various sizes.

Saying that, the most common door width currently used in England and Wales is 2’6” (30 inches or 762mm), while in Scotland, doors are largely a bit narrower and generally measure around 28.5 inches (726mm).

It varies from installer to installer what they deem a ‘standard’ door, calling one such on the basis of their product line and approach to fitting. James Oliver is bespoke-minded, so all our doors are made-to-measure and we can easily attend to non-standard openings.

Typical Standard Internal Door Sizes for UK Homes

Metric and imperial naming both continue to be used for standard internal door sizes in the UK. An example would be when a door is deemed “2 ft 6” in older buildings or by some installers, which equates to 762 mm in metric terms.

Imperial sizes of 2’3”, 2’6” and 2’9” are common in England and Wales, but Scotland usually prefers to work to metric measurements, especially when it involves a newer home and 2040 mm tall doors are requested.

Our table draws attention to common standard door sizes, detailing width and height in imperial and metric units.

Standard External Front & Back Door Sizes

Standard sizes are largely consistent if we’re speaking about front and back doors in the UK. The most popular external door dimensions begin at 1981 mm in height and vary in width from 610 mm to 926 mm.

Sizes in this region will generally be suitable for traditional door openings, which removes any complexity of fitting a replacement door and has compatibility with the majority of bespoke frames.

As for the 2040 mm tall series, coveted at new-builds in Scotland, it offers a contemporary and lofty aesthetic. Use the below table to uncover where each available size is employed.

Standard Door Sizes By Material

The height and width of a door, together with its slab thickness, is dependent upon the chosen door material.

44 mm to 56 mm is the typical size range of a timber door, with a composite door more often about 44 mm to 77, and UPVC doors the slimmest of the three.

Each of the materials exhibit a contrasting aesthetic and also have opposing thermal and security standards. Discover more with a look at the following table, where you’ll see we’ve broken down common door sizes and materials.

Happily for all our customers, James Oliver will always take care of any measuring requirements, so it isn’t something to concern yourself with too much. Put plans in place for that to happen by booking an appointment.
