How To Create A Cosy Home This Winter

We don’t need a crystal ball to tell you it will be cold this winter – this is England after all!

How cold exactly is anybody’s guess, but it’s always sensible to prepare for the worst, and that should include ensuring your home is weatherproofed, in the event of temperatures falling below the normal average.

You will only have yourself to blame if you’re left shivering and crying out for more warmth when winter comes and your home simply can’t keep external conditions out of your interior.

It’s a situation that needn’t occur as it’s pretty straightforward to “winterproof” a property, beginning with a change of windows and doors…

Install a more thermally efficient set of windows and doors

Your current windows and doors will be at fault if you can feel extreme coldness indoors and draughts. They may have lost their structural integrity, causing gaps to appear in the frames, and if they’re only single glazed, there’s little hope of them managing to insulate the property effectively.

Upgrading to double or triple glazed aluminium windows and doors will massively improve insulation and heat retention, ensuring that barely any of the warmth generated by your boiler gets wasted.

Look to buy windows and doors with the highest energy rating you can afford, ideally with a minimum “A” energy efficiency rating.

Get a boiler service organised

Neglecting to get your boiler serviced annually could eventually prove costly. Should it break down over the winter months, you will be left completely without hot water and heating.

Having a qualified gas engineer inspect your boiler will reduce the risk of it packing up as they will be able to identify any flaws within the system and hopefully be able to remedy them. The checks they do will also help determine if the boiler is running as efficiently as it can do.

If you’re told you need a new boiler, don’t be alarmed by the cost. You’ll get your money back through the energy savings you’ll make.

Invest in a solid roof for your extension

Thousands of conservatory and orangery owners hate the arrival of winter because it causes their extension to become icy cold, far too cold to use.

They shouldn’t resent the winter months as they can always replace their existing roof covering with a solid tiled roof to improve insulation and make the space liveable, no matter how cold it is outside.

Checks will need to be made that you are permitted to fit a solid roof, and it will only take a matter of days to have it installed.
