A Clarification Of What Flush And Non-Flush Casement Windows Are

We have a comprehensive collection of window styles at James Oliver and if you’ve gone through them all online, it may not have escaped your attention that we offer flush casement windows and standard casement windows (non-flush).

Don’t know the difference between the two? If not, you certainly won’t be the only person, but that’s what we’re here for, to try and educate you on a subject we know so well.

A flush casement window has a totally flat surface and it’s because its window sashes sit exactly flush with the window frame.

You’ve probably now preempted what a non-flush casement is and yes, it’s a casement window with sashes that moderately extend past the window frame.
Interested in knowing more about them? We can provide all the other essential details.

How long have flush and non-flush casements existed?

The 19th century is when the flush casement window was born and compared to now, it would always be constructed using timber, as it was long before the usage of UPVC and aluminium as window materials.

Non-flush casements are older though, first made in the 18th century and built by blacksmiths because they would have iron framework. 300 years on from then, the non-flush casement window is still the country’s favourite window design.

Why have people fallen for the flush window again?

James Oliver was one of a select few window companies that identified a rebirth of interest in flush window designs and as a result, developed our contemporary take on a traditional flush casement window – the Envisage range.

We followed the historical guidelines of timber flush windows so that Envisage shares the same lines and proportions, but manufactured it from UPVC so that it doesn’t suffer from the problems associated with wooden windows.

Can you advise which of them to buy?

If you’re living in a conservation area, you’re more likely to receive permission to upgrade your windows from your local authority if the replacements are flush UPVC windows as they know how good they are at preserving the authentic character of homes.

Flush sash windows also have an immaculate symmetry suited to modern buildings – for these types of applications, Black and Anthracite Grey tend to be popular colour choices.

The character of a casement window makes it an option for just about any age or style of property, so it’s a reliable replacement.
